Vicki Norris Of Restoring Order®

Especially in the New Year, we’re all looking for more order and impact in our lives. To help us, rēp alum and organizing expert Vicki Norris of Restoring Order®, shares her story about God restoring natural, spiritual and Kingdom order in her own household. This process equipped Vicki and her husband, Trevor, to step into their mandate to return this broken world to Original Order.

FROM: Doing Business “For God”

I started Restoring Order in 1999 as an organizing consulting practice. God’s favor was evident immediately and our impact spread - I began speaking publically and became the organizing expert on a local TV show for seven years. HGTV “discovered” me and invited me to be on one of TV’s most popular shows at the time ‘Mission: Organization’. And in 2005, Harvest House publishers offered me a two book deal.

In 2006, my husband Trevor and I had our first son, Nash. At that moment, Trevor and I stepped into what really was the first call we perceived on our lives: for Trevor to stay home with our child(ren) and for me to continue growing Restoring Order. In 2007, all was going according to plan – I was writing my second book, pregnant with our second son, our P&L was the best ever, and yet I began to feel stuck. I wanted to really go for it and create an empire. I thought to myself at the time, “Move over Martha [Stewart], Vicki’s coming up because God wants His people at the top!” I had achieved a lot but I knew that “a plan without many advisors fails,” and I felt I had reached critical mass with what I knew how to do.

So, I hired advisors for strategic planning, public relations, and an agent to help me break through. Six months down the road and $75,000 later, I was no further ahead and I was in a lot of pain. I was mad and didn’t understand. I had a lot of frustration and pain towards God, “I’m a woman who wants to do right by you, glorify Your Name and run an excellent business and this is what I get? I am doing this for you!!” I really thought I had done everything God could expect of me. Pain makes our hearing very acute, and I began to stalk God on why this had happened.

TO: Administrating His Business

In Fall 2009, I began my Kingdom journey when I took Patrice Tsague’s Biblical Entrepreneurship (BE) course. Throughout the materials I heard – for the first time- the phrase “The Kingdom of God” over and over. It was like God was highlighting the phrase in yellow. Wasn’t that heaven? I wasn’t sure, but I had to find out.

In January 2010, the Lord very clearly said to me “I’m bringing you back to my bride”. Immediately, I expanded from teaching about natural order into preaching and teaching natural, spiritual and Kingdom order. That’s the key - God is a God of order.

Over these last 3 years since our own awakening, Trevor and I discovered our hunger to see God’s original intent restored not only in households and businesses, but also in the financial, health, and spiritual realm. We want people to experience the supernatural life, living a radical life on the edge by listening and doing what God says. For Restoring Order, listening and doing has become a daily practice.

For instance, two years ago, we were struggling to reactivate our clients. God showed me a strategy for creating a short term retainer system called the “Organizing Club”. Not only did it work, now 66% of our business is recurring! Another time, I had a vision of our Client Services Manager going down into a mine shaft with a spoon and a pair of tweezers. God was trying to tell us she had the wrong tools to “mine” our database, using only the phone and email. Upon further inquiry, He led us to create an inspirational postcard campaign (using our database) when everyone else was departing from direct mail. The postcards made their way into people’s homes and consciousness when we physically could not. So many were blessed – they used them as bookmarks, posted on their refrigerator… some even called our office crying. And, to top it off, we could trace an entire month’s worth of business to that idea.

AND: Embracing Our Family Mandate

To step into our calling, we’ve had to do some crazy things [by the world’s standards] to “restore order” in our own lives. The Lord asked us to stop trusting the stock market with His money, so we closed our account and waited to hear from the Lord. Most people would say that’s not wisdom. But we knew that He has appointed our property to be an apostolic resource center and was leading us. We have a barn that holds about 100 people. We’re teaching people how to live in God’s original intent (we call it “Garden Living”) and helping them break out of the world’s patterns (Romans 12:2). As we teach, we’re beginning to see signs, wonders, healings and people filled with the Spirit. So, we’ve used the money as the Spirit has led, to make improvements to our property and will use it to produce an income. And God keeps blessing us with more. We’ve begun doing more large-scale events and we were always renting bathrooms. So, one of the improvements we made was adding bathrooms. Who knew that the abundant life might include flushing our savings down the toilet!

God also continues to change our thinking about our family mandate. He had been speaking to us already, but confirmed through rēp, that we weren’t fully integrated: Trevor took care of the kids and I ran the business. But now, we’re in what we call “misness” (ministry / business) and operating like a household together. The more we operate as one and in righteousness, the more we accelerate. We don’t want to just wake-up God’s people to the Kingdom and then let them hit the “snooze button” and return to life as usual; we want to disciple them into radical, victorious living together.

The rēp community has modeled what we’ve begun to do here. We have to lay our lives down for one another – first as husband and wife and then as a community. We’re fighting the giants of entitlement, aloneness, and religion, so we need to equip our household and walk with them over time. Being aware of kairos vs. chronos time has also been huge – we’re in lifelong and lasting relationships to encourage and recognize the greatness in one another.

Trevor and I are thankful to Brett and Lyn and the entire rēp community for being the true Body. We needed to know we were not alone up here in Oregon emerging into this nutty Kingdom life. The Johnsons and the rēp program have been spiritual midwives for our family, helping us be birthed into our destiny.

Awender Chiropractic

We recently sat down with Joe and Donna and asked them for a quick testimony about their business path and the way God has worked in and through it. Below is the testimony from Dr. Joe.

“My Dad had a practice in South San Francisco for 45 years, and a satellite location in Redwood City – which I bought from him. Donna joined in 1999 when we got married, and what’s great is that Donna had a medical background to begin with, working for an oral surgeon in Palo Alto. So God really weaved us together to complement each other well.

At Awender Chiropractic, we look at the spine, which is essentially the central nervous system - so if your spine isn’t lined up, then your nervous system won’t work properly. Our chiropractic philosophy is: “The power that made the body, heals the body – which is God”. It’s a lifestyle is congruent with our faith, in that the body has a great capacity to heal.

My wife, Donna, and I were interested in making an impact in our community with our business and faith. Our prayer years ago - before our clinic was opened - was that we would be a light to the community. However, we didn’t know what that meant, or what it looked like. We were seeking a new paradigm to allow our faith to touch every aspect of our lives, including our business affairs.  It just did not make sense to us to leave God out of our business/household interactions.   We did not want to compartmentalize our lives, living in different boxes of what we call life.

We first came into contact with Rep in 2003, and went on the venture to South Africa in April of 2003. Rep has been an awesome blessing for our household since that time. When we came back to the United States with our 18 month old son, we had a spiritual and intellectual shift.  We wanted to consciously and intentionally see God move in our business.  We have seen God bless our business in many, many different ways.  We have also seen God bless our staff, patients, family and businesses.

One of the ways The Awenders have shifted their focus and views of God in business, by having a Miracle Wall hanging in their office to record the miracles they experience both inside and outside the company. After watching ‘Finger of God’ and seeing miracles happen so often around the world, Dr. Joe explains, “I hadn’t seen any miracles, so I prayed to God and asked Him for a miracle the very next day and so I asked Him to bring in a patient who needed a miracle. To make sure that it was from Him, I specified that the patient wouldn’t be from around here. So a patient came in, and he needed a miracle. After chiropractic care and prayer, he said he felt better. Turns out he was from New Mexico!

Just like when the Israelites crossed the Jordan, God told them to put 3 stones to remember and tell their children, etc, we decided to write them on the wall and also keep stones in our “miracle jar”.  So we’ve been doing this since 2008, and we’ve probably recorded up to 500 miracles – for our employees and clients along with all their families. We’ve found that it happens on a weekly basis!”

"The way we feel that we’re Kingdom-focused is by understanding whose we are, not who we are. Our Kingdom principles translate to our staff, the UPS man, the tenants in the building and to every aspect of what we do. A more specific example would be the way we pay our staff -  we want to make sure they are compensated well and not living in a poverty state.  Also for our patients, those are hurting financially and can’t exactly pay, we will take care of them through pro bono work.

We are truly grateful for the Rep community for their unconditional ongoing love and support.  Lyn and Brett Johnson have been blessed with a vision and gift that has not only blessed countless businesses in including our household but carry a blessing for future generations."

Perfect Smile Dental

Perfect Smile Dental was opened in 2005, one year after we got married.  We did not know God then. During the first few years, we faced many challenges. Annie could not handle managing the staff and operations while performing dentistry. Tim was only able to help part-time as he was focusing on his career as a real estate broker at Keller Williams Realty.  Our lives revolved around work and we were slaves to it.  Even though we were doing well financially, we did not have joy and our marriage was suffering.  We started questioning our purpose in life - there had to be more than just working and making money.

At Keller Williams, Tim learned that the priorities in life should be: God, family, then work.  He deduced the reason we were not happy was because we put work first, and we had no God in our lives.  So in 2007, we started a search for God.  Tim grew up Catholic and I was raised Buddhist.  We went to different temples to listen to the monks preaching, but we did not understand much and did not find any peace.  We tried different churches, but ran into a few “weird” ones. Then, finally, our friends took us to Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View.  There we felt God’s peace and the messages made perfect sense to us and were applicable.  After three months attending ALCF, God touched our hearts, we responded to the altar call and accepted Christ.  We were desperate for a change and we needed God to help us.

God immediately started the transformation in our lives. We had more peace and more joy. He convicted us of sinful habits; we gave it all up.  We surrendered all aspects of our lives to Him and asked Him to show us how to run the business His way.  He led us to rēp training and went on a venture to Jarkata, Indonesia.  We came back and dedicated Perfect Smile Dental to Him, asking Him to use it for His glory.  He gave us a vision that it will be a place to help the patients feel better when they leave than when they came in.   He also called us to be shepherds to our staff.

For the past three years, we have a fellowship lunch every two weeks to share prayer requests and study Scriptures with our team. Richard Lai, a rēp alumni, has been faithful in helping us to lead the group . Some of them were hesitant to attend at first, but God moved on their hearts. As they join, they are able to witness His miracles and answers to prayer.  Their faith in God is strengthened. We pray every morning as a team to ask for God’s presence. Our patients are happier; we also pray for some of them.  A few say they feel God’s peace, or something different about this place.

We have applied many principles we learned from rēp to “repurpose” the business.  The most impactful one was repurposing the “People.”  It started with us as leaders. We no longer look at our staff as employees, we think of them as part of our household.  We lead by serving them, encouraging them to grow to their fullest God-given potential.  Some of them have come to us for prayers, advice, or even financial help. The transformation in our office would not have happened if it weren’t for God leading us to rēp.  And we are grateful that Brett & Lyn Johnson have helped us to expand our thinking and encouraged us to hang onto our calling even when things get tough.  Our prayer is that God continues to bless and use rēp to transform many other businesses worldwide for His glory.

On the road to societal transformation - We are so thankful that God had mercy and saved us.  God has used our lives as a testimony to draw others to Him.  Our friends saw the transformation He did, and are now following the Lord wholeheartedly.  A dental colleague in Sacramento also sought for God’s guidance in her dental office.

What’s next? Brett is currently working with us to develop a spiritual-wellness program for our team. Also, God has called us to expand to another location to serve His people and reach the lost. When we opened the new facility, we gave the first day as a “first fruits” by providing free dental care to the families of our employees. Tim shared our empty calendar, void of dental appointments, saying he did not know how God was going to fill the calendar, but he knew God would. Just then someone knocked on the door needing emergency dental care. The journey of impact on our new household members began again.

A Note from Brett Johnson: A while ago I started calling Tim “Father Tim.” Something has changed in his self-perception. He is more at peace and knows that he and Annie can hold a spiritual umbrella over their staff and patients. As the sense of wellbeing among the staff has increased, it has a ripple effect on patients too.
